MAPPING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENDANGERED CRAFT PRACTICE ACROSS ISRAEL AND EUROPEAN CULTURES
UAL LCF & Shenkar
Our cultures share textile craft techniques at risk of being lost such as ground loom, finger and tablet weaving as well as sprang, braiding and knotting. These techniques allow the creation of bespoke, customisable textile artefacts using basic tools and materials.
Although much work has been done in capturing this from an anthropology perspective; technique-based mapping has been understudied. Ori Topaz from Shenkar (Israel) and Professor Veronika Kapsali from LCF, UAL are collaborating on creating a technique map of knotting, weaving and braiding crafts between both our cultures to capture, preserve and disseminate knowledge to young designer/ makers in a way that is visual, and practice based.
